Art Work

Photographs of subject. My project was based on teenage insecurities and body image.

Observational Drawing sheet.

Below is an example of my development.

This is my final piece. It is A1 and is done in oil pastels and the tape measures are done in graphite. It represents the mass amount of insecurities regarding body image in the teenage community.

Type Choices.

Final Draft.

The outline for my final piece. Fine liner so the scanner would pick it up better than pencil making it easier to threshold.

The painting was done using a light box so the the outline matched up.

This is the two piece put together. Outline was done using threshold and deleting the white. The painting was edited, changing levels, hue, saturation and lightness.

I added the title. This was drawn around the design so that it fitted well.

Institutional information, blurb and flap writing added.

The blurb was then added using the same type from the title. This was the last step before my piece was finished.

Magazine Front Cover

Photographs of subject matter (Travel magazine - Dubai edition).

Initial Scamps.

Further Drafting.

Firstly, I placed my chosen photo for the magazine into photoshop and I edited the levels; light, dark and medium tones.

I then edited the hue, saturation and lightness (command U)

I then placed in a drawn copy of the picture. I did this using the light box to get the correct proportions and placements of the outlines. I used black fine liner so that I could then put this into threshold (only black and white).

I then deleted the white, selecting it using the magic wand tool, and placed this layer on top of the actual picture. This meant the picture would show through where the white originally was on the threshold version of the drawing.

I then added the mast head. I wanted it to be sans serif and bod, but have an original element; the curving of the cut off points. I also picked the colour from the image of the buildings. This colour is a less saturated light orange/red, which contrasts well with the blue sky.

At this point I added a sticker. I chose to use bright yellow to contrast with the subtle colours of the image and mast head.

At this point I added the cover lines using a brush effect inspired by my copy and block backgrounds to contrast. The main cover line 'Fancy a safari in the Sahara' is larger to create contrast in size and emphasise the hierarchy.

I then viewed this piece and critically analysed it. This then gave me ideas on how to improve it. I changed the colour of the sticker as I feel it was at the top of the hierarchy, and I didn't want it to be. I toned the colour down and made it fit with the colour scheme by colour picking the photo.

I wanted the mast head to be higher in the order of hierarchy. To do this I needed it to stand out more. I added a white outline to highlight the text and I added an inner shadow to allow the text the appear 3D. This completed my magazine front cover shown below.

No Staples Book

Firstly, I drew out some basic stationary using fine liner.

I then separated each drawing onto its own layer and adjusted them to threshold.

I used the brush tool when colouring the drawings and coloured 'out the lines' to add a childish feel. I used red as the main colour, using different shades. I also used different shades of black to contrast with the saturated red colours.

I did this to all of the drawings on their separate layers so that I could transfer them to the no staples book template.

I used ink and a paintbrush to create words associated with stationary to incorporate within my design. I added threshold so that it was crisp and linked with the colour scheme (black and red).

I then placed each edited drawing and inked writing into the template for the content of the no staples book. I changed the sizes and angles so that it would fit together with an equal spread of white space.

For the poster on the opposite side of the no staples book I wanted to include an orderly design. I placed the first image in (compass) and placed the point of the compass in the centre of the template. Then I duplicated it, placing the duplicated one onto of the originally placed compass. Then I rotated it but moved it's centre point of the rotation to the centre on the template. I repeated this until I had made a complete circle of equally spaced compass images. To complete this design I repeated the same process with each edited stationary image.
